The pattern in the past ten years, has been to have a current popular Pop or R&B artist perform during the halftime show of the Super Bowl and then there is an attempt to please older viewers with an aged rock and roll artist in another halftime show. Super Bowl XLVIII combines the two into one performance.
Bruno Mars and The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be the credited acts, when the Denver Broncos clash with the Seattle Seahawks in New York’s MetLife Stadium, in the 2014 Super Bowl.
Although Mars has not been a common face for as long as his counter-performers, his track record speaks for itself. As the second-quickest to receive five number one singles in the United States, which is second only to Elvis Presley, who accomplished five singles in only two years.
Three years removed from the release of his first album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, he has been known as the guy who could “write a catchy hook [chorus]” for other popular performers to an American solo singer-songwriter who has sold 115 million albums worldwide.
Well known by most American audiences, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are the thirty plus year veterans who were just recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
Unlike Bruno Mars, these rockers did not rise to the top nearly as fast. They reached the U.S. top 100 singles chart for the first time with their fourth album and the song “Higher Ground.”
This was followed by countless successful albums and singles that would carry the band’s household name created in the early 90′s to now.
The Super Bowl XLVII halftime show drew 110.5 million viewers when Beyonce and Destiny’s Child shared the stage, and that is only second behind Madonna’s performance the year prior.
Unfortunately, that show may be shadowed by the 34 minute blackout in San Francisco’s recently retired Candlestick Park that led to a delay to the start of the second half.
With the combination of young and old, the 2014 Super Bowl halftime show performers aim to shine a brighter light to the rest of the game.
