The Chargers have signed RB Jackie Battle. With the Chiefs last year, Battle set career-highs with 149 carries and 597 yards. San Diego views him as a versatile player. "He's been added for depth," GM A.J. Smith said. "We feel he has triple value. He is an outstanding special teamer. He's also a good running back and can help us at fullback." As a RB, Battle is a plodder who's averaging just 3.8 yards per carry for his career. He'll join the competition for backup duties, along with Ronnie Brown, Curtis Brinkley and LeRon McClain. Ryan Mathews' role as the featured runner is as safe as ever.
